Picture yourself hosting friends for a delicious lunch. It is a potluck lunch and everyone is bringing something. You made sure you book chicken as the dish you would be making. You have the perfect recipe, and you are not only excited to show off the magic you are about to put together, but equally excited to feed your friends some great food. They arrive on time. The food is laid out. The wine is corked open. Some amazing music is playing. The sun is out.  Laughter cracks across the room and the vibe is right. The chicken you made is the first thing to be cleared, and everyone is asking for the recipe you used. Mango Blackberry Mocktail

Finally the sun is out as it really should be in what is typically our hot season! January was shockingly cool, and even more startling, rainy!! I love sunny weather and not that the sun is out in full glory, you bet I will be going for more walks to soak it in. Heck, I am completing this blog post from the back yard, on my leso and in the sun. What I wish I had too is this mango blackberry mocktail, that I made a few weeks back and am literally salivating at, and really missing and I get this post finished for you guys to try it out as well.

Sweet Chili Whiskey Loaded Hotdog

I made this recipe on a whim last year September. My sister was having her boyfriend over and she demanded (literally) that I fix them a snack while they watch their movie. I was not in the mood for cooking, and I wanted to make it quick but yummy therefore hotdogs -with my own twist- fit the bill! I walked you through my Instagram stories as I fixed this and you guys wend crazy over it!!! I honestly did not expect that lol, but I was pleased you guys loved it.

Mango Cucumber Chicken Salad

As it always is this time of year, I will always find an excuse to stuff a mango in my mouth! Be it eating 7 in one sitting or using them in numerous creative recipes, I will always find a way to have my daily dose of mango. Each year during mango season, we always make a couple of recipes with this bomb fruit. I made this twitter thread to make it easy for you to follow through my mango recipes, and today we add another one!

Red Wine Braised Honey Pork Ribs

How fast has 2019 flown by?!! It has been a beautiful decade and an amazing year which I feel is culminating into the new decade with lots of promise and success. 2020 smells like wealth. It sounds like joy and laughter. It feels like going through challenges with grit, resilience and coming out the other side stronger, shinier and wiser. I have been looking back on the past decade and I am so happy about my growth and dumbfounded by the unexpected twist and turns of life and how everything just falls in place. I would have never guessed that me, a BCOM finance student would end the decade as the best Food Blogger in the country! I would have never guessed that the things I was so insecure about in 2010 about my body, would be my absolute favorite ones at the end of the decade. Everything just works out, and in hindsight, the most random twists make sense! I am so excited about the path ahead.

I know that paragraph is so not related to what today’s recipe is about lol, but now let us get into it. It is rainy and most of us are indoors, and it is a great time to go within and take stock. As we reflect on the past decade, please do so while chowing down my red wine braised honey pork ribs. For sure, the best you will ever have.

Happy New Month guys!!!

Heh! Si this year imekimbia!! Just one moment ago we were celebrating the new year and here we are wrapping it up. 2019 for me has been a year of immense mental self-improvement. It has been the year of the shadows of my inner child being dredged up and demanding to be dealt with and healed. 2019 has been the year I finally started savoring and deeply enjoying being single. 2019 has had me make some big girl purchases and making big girl investments *aggresively flexes muscles*. Overall, it has been a dope ass year and I am looking forward to the remaining 7 weeks!

As we take in this month, take stock and reflect, let us do that while enjoying something super delicious!! On my table today is the beeeeeeest ever beef pilau! I know you will love this!

Kitunguu Matawi & White Wine Creamy Mushroom Soup

A great soup is really life changing!! They are stupid easy to make, no matter how you look at it, and what I love most is how easy it is to develop flavors. I have about 15 soup recipes on this blog, each one having it’s own character and selling points. I cannot choose one favorite one coz it feels like choosing a favorite child lol. But what I can say is, I love my kitunguu matawi white wine creamy mushroom soup because of how herby it is! I love it because of the mushrooms and how filling they are. I love the creaminess! I love the mild booziness. I love everything about this!

Rosemary & Garlic Viazi Karai

I loved walking home from school. Every other day, we took the bus, but on Friday, we would forgo a bus ride and instead use the fare for buying snacks and treats along the way. We would grab some sukari nguru ya 3 bob in Otiende, then viazi karai or bhajia for 5 bob at Akiba and with what’s left over- some mahindi choma or ice near SouthLands. 10 bob could really be stretched a long way, and everything we got was very much worth the walk. Now as adults and with full knowledge of how to make all these tasty things ourselves, we do just that, of course with tiny but super delicious twists. Kamba Wa Kupaka

A lot of what I cook is actually dictated by my cravings. Whatever I feel like cooking, whichever flavors my tongue wants to feel, whichever textures I feel in my mouth- that is what I will go with. In as much as most of those flavors do not make it to the blog, plenty of them do. And with time, I will share those that didn’t with you. I had some calamari last week during a meeting I was attending and that triggered my cravings for seafood in general. I am on that vibe now! I want anything from the sea, and best believe we are gonna make it super delicious!

Happy new month my loves!!

I hope April has started off nice and happy and you are looking forward to a deliciously fun and abundant next 30 days!! I find it pretty weird that April is still pretty hot. I do love me some sunshine, but in all honesty, I also love the cosiness of rain. But as we wait for the weather to change, let us enjoy the sunshine and the dawn of the new fruit season-pear season. Pear season is usually very brief, and I am making sure I make the most of it this time round. Pilipili and Rosemary Marinated Mbuzi Choma Na Kachumbari

There are a couple of things that are distinctly Kenyan. “Me I” is distinctly Kenyan. Our loud, artsy Matatus are distinctly Kenyan. Phrases such as ‘wah’ ‘si’ ‘hebu’ can only be understood by someone who has grown up Kenyan; and even when explained, the meaning will not be understood as it should. Choma over every holiday, and if we are being honest- during any time we get together- is one of those distinct Kenyan habits. We love our choma!! Choma is a roast- equivalent to the South African braai. We do love our meat, and roasting it makes it even better.

Mbuzi (goat) choma is very very popular too. It is among my top three favorite chomas and today’s recipe and video takes you through how I make mine explosively good!!! I hope you love it as much as I love it!

Sage & Plum Mocktail

I came back to Nairobi from Maragoli for my Christmas holidays with my spirit fully recharged! I enjoyed every single second of my stay in shagz and I spoke about it in my last YouTube video. Besides the very obvious refreshing and magical stay in upcountry, I also really enjoy travelling to the west. Most people, especially those with rural homes close to the city do not fair well with long trips, But I love it. I love the transition of landscapes from the dusty acacia fields of Naivasha, to the rolling tea farms of Kericho, humidity of bustling Kisumu and then finally to the strickingly sunny, green hills of Maragoli. Travelling back was a breeze too- and of course we had to get some plums on our way back among other groceries. We bought plenty, and besides incorporating some as part of my pork marinate or eating them on their own, I decided to make a mocktail which is simply perfect for this weather we  are currently experincing.

Thyme & Cumin Veg Burger With Creamy Lime Avocado Sauce

Living as a vegetarian in this country is crazy EASY!!!!! We are so fortunate to have very many fresh ingredients and a ton of pulses that can be cooked in many different ways. Being vegetarian is not complicated or special- it simply means one does not eat meat. That means you can very readily enjoy a majority or Kenyan meals without slashing out plenty from our everyday meals. You will still enjoy your bhajia, viazi karai, ndengu, chapati, egg curry, githeri, bean stews, ugali, all our amazing traditional mbogas, biringanya, seasonal fruits, rice dishes, faluda, vibibi, vitumbua, mandazi, viazi vya rojo, njahi….the list is literally endless! We surely do live in the best country on earth!!

I love meat but I do not hesitate cutting it out from my dies once in a while because I still know I will eat delicious meals with all the amazing produce we have. I love meaty burgers but veg burgers are equally as delicious! My veg burger, whose patty was made with njahi and mushroom- and with the rich flavors of thyme and cumin  was one for the books!

Mini Kenyan Style Kebabs

I remember the first time I ate a kebab. I remember standing very eagerly in a sweaty, packed Kenchic, in a queue that never seemed to move any faster, and my tummy that couldn’t rumble any harder. I remember passing my chance to have fries, topping up the cost with my mearger coins just so that I can buy my kebab. I remember smiling once my kebabs were wrapped and handed to me. And I remember this day in particular, not because I enjoyed my kebabs, but because I fell really sick there after. I moved form hunger pangs to running stomach really quick! My first kebab experience was pretty horrific, and such experiences really leave a mark in your psyche! I must admit, since then, I never ever EVER order kebabs form fast food joints. However, there is always a way around every issue. And for e and my kebabs, I decided to learn how to make mine at home. That way, I am 100% sure of the sanitation, their freshness, and a huge bonus being, I have complete freedom regarding the spices herbs and flavors I would like to have! Now, they are one of my fave snacks ever!

The kind of kebabs we have here in Kenya are different form the ones from other nations but delicious nonetheless. Today I am gonna show you how to make them, both in today’s video and this blog post. You are gonna see how easy they are to make! <3

Bay Leaf and Oregano Egg Curry

I loooooooooove eggs!! I love eggs in all the shape and forms they come in. If you open my chest, my heart is in the shape of my egg. That is just how deep the love is lol. Eggs are my second love after potatoes. They are my favorite breakfast item and thank God they can be incorporated in other meal groups as well. Upon request of one of my readers, this is another egg recipe that is gonna be a favorite in your home as well. This one you will love, just as you fell head over heels in love with my chicken curry recipe and my ukwaju whole tilapia curry recipe.

Cumin and Thyme Njahi

Njahi is one of those beans that has gotten quite a bad rep. They have been likened to choking hazards, to mud, to poop and everything else imaginable. Woiye, poor little Njahi! You see, once something is poorly prepared, no matter how nutritious, one will grow up to dislike it. However, in my book, njahi, just like everything else, can be made super delicious! I love the richness of the bean and how excellently they take up flavor. I love how nutrient packed they are. I love how they go with quite a number of starches. I love me some njahi!

Cajun Chicken Wings in Pineapple Tangawizi BBQ Sauce

I am one of those people who eats according to what their soul desires. I cook depending on my mood. And for that reason, I have never really abided to a meal plan. What I cook on a particular day is almost 100% dependent on my mood and what I have in my freezer and fridge. I am also one who does not feel shy or guilty for that once in a while indulgence. As long as it is within my recommended daily caloric count, yes, I can eat anything and everything. It is the overdoing that makes a certain food bad. A once in a while treat is completely ok guys <3! That said, my current OBSESSION is my cajun chicken wings with my pineapple tangawizi bbq sauce. How mouthwatering does that sound?!!!  It is very easy to make, and this pineapple tangawizi bbq sauce is right up there on the list of one of my all time fave creations!

Coconut Milk Peanut Sauce Matoke

My aunt came home from Maragoli with the largest ever mgomba wa matoke I have ever seen. I was so happy since I love how matoke from the western parts of the county taste like, and I embarked on making matoke every other day of that week. I made them just as my mom does, then razed through the recipes I has earlier made for the blog and once I was done, I decided to get my creative juices flowing and create something totally new. As I was brainstorming, I realized I have never made peanut sauce matoke. Memories of a not so pleasant one I tried at an acquaintances home came flooding back into my head. That was the reason I was so wary of than combination. Since I always say everything in this world can be made delicious, I decided to get over my silly fear, do some testing of my own and develop flavors that would work for me , and those that you too, would enjoy!That being said, today I have for you my glorious coconut milk peanut sauce which you will fall head over heels inlove with!!

Garlic Ukwaju Whole Tilapia Curry

One of the most difficult questions I find answering is “What inspires your recipes?”. I mean for the most part, my recipes are inspired by nostalgic memories of what I grew up eating and what my mom made for us, but on the other side, literally anything can inspire a recipe. From an aroma, an oduor :D, a texture, a color etc. This recipe was birthed as a result of stress and a bad workday I was having. Sounds weird, but I think most creatives get this. I had spent a Monday creating a video, that took 6 hours to make, only to be told by the client it needed to be deleted.  I felt a bit frustrated and stressed so I left the house for a few minutes just to clear my head. Drove around Nairobi for about found myself in Kenyatta Market. I found the ladies just concluding frying fresh Tilapia and decided to get some. On my way home I thought about what I would make, and since I had soaked some ukwaju for extraction before I left, I decided to marry the two. Not only did the development of this recipe cheer me up, but the moment I sat down to eat made me completely forget that I was sad! This is the BEST whole tilapia recipe you will ever ever EVVVVVVEEEEEEEEERRRR try!

Chili Cinnamon Sweet Potato Fries

Traffic all over Nairobi at rush hour is usually mind numbingly crazy. I usually just stop thinking about how much time I will waste, lest it makes me irredeemably angry, and just think about everything else and hope to get home soon. My favorite thing to do is people watching. I wonder what the lady in the next matatu is laughing at while on her phone. I wonder what the school child heading home found most fun while at school. I wonder what everyone is thinking and why they are doing what they are doing and try piece together their lives together from my thoughts. Eventually, I will always make eye contact with the very assertive hawkers in traffic. Most I will not purchase anything from, but when I can, I can never let a good deal pass me by. A certain lady was selling enormous sweet potatoes, at a pretty affordable price, and I took just one as I knew it would feed many. I like having sweet potatoes for breakfast, and also as a soup, but this time round I decided to make something different and so glad I settled on sweet potato fries!
