Spicy Grilled Beef Burger with Coleslaw

I am not the hugest junk food fan . . What really gets my juices flowing is a good home cooked meal. Soul food is my thing :).  But once in a while, I do crave some good pizza, burgers or any other juicy oily meal to gulp down. When it comes to burgers, I am usually very picky with where I get mine from. A lot of the times, I get some burgers with strange tasting patties most with really dry meat, while some tasting like plastacine (don’t wonder how I knew how that tastes like :D). To fix this, I started making my own at home. And to be honest, the flavor profile of my burger is light years ahead of those from fast food joints. My homemade pattie was super moist, so juicy and perfectly flavored. This was complimented so well with the most breathtaking sauce, which is also homemade.

Perfect for a picnic, a fun lunch with pals or just for yourself. This grilled beef burger is so explosive it will literally make your tongue lick your brain!

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 spring onion, chopped

3 cloves garlic, minced

4 tablespoons ketchup

1/2  tablespoon ground chilli powder

1 teaspoon of ground mustard

1 heaped  tablespoon dijon mustard

1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or freshly squeezed lemon juice

2 tablespoons honey

Some salt and ground black pepper

For the slaw

Cabbage

Carrot

Onion

Salad dressing of your choice

Method

For the sauce

Heat some vegetable oil over medium-high heat in a frying pan. Add the onion; cook until soft. This will take  2 to 3 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add the ketchup, dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, spices, honey and 1/4 of hot water cup water. Bring this to a boil and simmer for 5-7 minutes. Add your salt and pepper. Let it simmer for 3 minutes, or until thickened, stirring occasionally.

At the end of it all, it should look like this:

Pour into a bowl and allow to cool to room temperature. Brush some sauce onto the patties as they cook. You can also spoon more on top when you assemble the burger. As for me, I put some sauce inside my pattie for extra juiciness #nom

For the burger.

Mix in the spices as in the recipe above with the minced meat. Kneed them until they are evenly distributed. Divide this into four portions and flatten them out.

Put some vegetable oil on your grill or frying pan. After it is hot, place your patties. Allow 4 minutes for each side or until they have browned well.

Take them from the heat and allow them to rest for a while. Besides cooling down alittle, this step is important too coz of these reasons. After they have cooled down a little  bit, cut them 3/4 through. Fill the gap with some of the sauce. This not only adds a ton of flavor, but ensures the patties stay moist.

Assembling our super-duper grilled beef burger:

Halve your bun and put your cheese first. If you have some lettuce, you can put that then followed by the cheese. Never put your sauce first since the bun will absorb all or most of it making it so soggy. It is the same tip I gave while making this sandwich. After the cheese, put your juicy sauce filled pattie.

I always use cheese by laughing cow for my burgers. It is so light and rich. You can find it in any retail supermarket in the CBD or elsewhere in the dairy section.

After the pattie, put a generous serving of our home made sauce. This sauce can also go really well with fries, or practically anything you want to add some sauce to. But it is heavenly with this grilled beef burger #slurp

Then, add some of the coleslaw you have just made. I made coleslaw here, the only difference with today’s recipe is that I never added my mango and apple. The coleslaw added some freshness to this grilled beef burger and also some crunch and texture.

Top it with the other bun then take a huge HUGE bite!

will the beef be well cooked in that time? is there an alternative way to prepare the patties?

    • kaluhiskitchen

      Hey Rae,
I was also a bit scared that I will serve raw patties since they were not pre-boiled as we do it in Kenya :D. But to my surprise, they cooked through and much faster than I had anticipated. Plus, the meat is minced so it will cook through faster always. I guarantee this method will still cook your patties.
You can first try this out with a small quantity, then graduate to more patties.

I love this recipe, especially the sauce. To give the patties an explosive flavor, I usually add a drop of mustard on both sides when they’re nearly done and cook for another 2 minutes.

    Hi,

Just wondering…can I use frozen meat I had prepared to make meatballs??it has egg to keep it together..do you think after I defrost them I will be able to flatten them into pattees??

    • kaluhiskitchen

You can use that. You will be able to flatten them once they are totally defrosted (is that a real word??).

  7. Shiro

Did you use the regular minced meat for a Pattie? How do you make it hold together especially as you grill it? I keep thinking it’s gonna fall part into tiny little pieces ????

    • kaluhiskitchen

For my patties, I just moulded them and they held. Once you cook them, it will still hold together. It is not like meatballs which come apart. It just holds
