coffee crepes with nutty yogurt cream

What better way to be woken up than to the sweet aroma of something delicious cooking!? And nothing won’t ever get me out of bed faster than the aroma of something good cooking. I like giving myself a break from always being the one cooking. Luckily in our home everyone likes cooking. So in the morning, I like treating myself to the delicious things my mummy and sisters make for us.

My elder sister Sieva likes making crepes for breakfast. My eldest sister, Cheredi, once added freshly grated coconut to hers sometime back and they were great. I decided to add my own twist to the same and in the process made what the gods would eat for breakfast. This was that good! I was abit anxious about how it would turn out but was pleased when it came out great. Want to start your day on the right foot? This is how :))

Chicken Tikka Masala

Nothing beats a good chicken recipe. And like all other meats, there are several ways of making the same dish. I asked sometime back on Instagram what you, my readers would like to see for the month of September. One of my followers requested more chicken recipes and I remembered I wanted to share a tikka recipe for the longest time. I couldn’t think of a better recipe to kick off September.

Chicken Tikka Masala is a crowd pleaser. It is one of those things if on a buffet, will be the first to be cleared. It is spicy but not in a repulsive way. And because it is chicken it will always be delicious. You will enjoy this just as much as my sisters and I did.

Tangerine and Sesame Seed French Toast

I have always loved my french toast. I have plenty of memories attached to this dish. And that’s what will always make it special to me. Besides that, I love french toast because it is easy to make and you can make it in a million different ways.

I stumbled upon Girl and Apron while I was making my photo own submissions to Food Gawker and I loved her blog the instant I checked it out. Her recipes are simple and we happen to even use the same theme LOL. I guess great minds really do thing alike! She made these french toast with some almonds and oranges. I thought I could recreate the same with what I had at hand. I decided to make tangerine and sesame seed french toast. This was G.O.O.D.

Broccoli and Garlic Penne Stir Fry

I get inspiration for my dishes from an aray of sources. One of them being the cooking shows on food network. My current favorites are Pioneer Woman, Siba’s Table, Trisha’s Southern Kitchen, Food Network Star, Chopped and Grandma’s Cookbook. Do you guys watch these too?? This dish was however inspired by Buddy Valastro of  Kitchen Boss. I like his recipes because they do not take too  long, neither are they too complicated which makes them relatable to me and million others. He likes Italian flavors, as his roots are Italian and incorporates them so well in his cooking.

His recipe used mushroms and macaroni. But I decided to use broccoli and penne pasta. It was outstandingly good. You know those meals you eat so fast because they are so good? This is one of them!

In My Pantry – My Essentials

I have a bunch of things I turn to when I want to add a bit of flare to my meals. Though some of them I do not use every day, I consider some must-have in my kitchen. They are not only tasty but transform an otherwise normal/boring dish into something very delicious.

Last week Wednesday on Instagram, my instaFam and I were discussing about the ingredients we like most in the kitchen. While it was nearly impossible to single out just one, there were some ingredients that were of common to all of us. Read the entire interactive conversation here. I shall take you through some of my (and some of my readers’) pantry essentials and why my I (we) deem them so important.

*Side Note* : I had so much fun taking these pictures and was so stocked with how they turned out. Improvement is a good thing :))

Garlicky French Beans and Carrots

This is one of the most common dishes in Kenya. For me, I like it as an alternative to cabbage, which I am not a big fan of. Also known as green beans or sting beans by different people around the globe, they are still as good by by other name. They are also very very healthy. There are many ways to cook french beans and carrots but here is my take on them. I like mine alot more savory and rich that is why I have them with plenty of garlic. Garlicky is not a word but today it is. If you are looking for an alternative to your usual veggies or a substitute to those you do not like, today is your lucky day!

Pea and Potato Stew

Potato stew is rather common in Kenya. Probablly because you can throw in various ingredients and having them cook all at once. This saves plenty of time. Unfortunately for most, this meal falls short of flavor. But in our home, we have found a way to have this taste great all the time. After years of tweaking my mum’s recipe, we finally settled on the best potato stew.

I shared this picture on Instagram and Face book a while back and it received quite a nice reception. I decided to share our family recipe today and I know you will like it. Regardless of what you make, no matter how basic, never ever compromise on how it tastes and looks. For today: Pea and Potato Stew

Pork sausage, Beef and Cheddar Meatballs

“That was fantastic, D!” I always know a meal is good mum ends her dinner with that comment: And my sisters and when my daddy gobble it down really fast. I have been trying a lot of new recipes and techniques lately and I was over the moon when this turned out better than I could have anticipated. My first meatball recipe is significantly different from this one. You can try both and see which one you personally like best. But judging form how fast these meatballs were cleared, this recipe is a winner!

They were cooked in two phases. They have two types of meat: pork sausage and minced beef which come together in the most beautiful flavor bomb. The cheese adds a lot of moisture and flavor. The juicy, rich sauce that coats them will make your tongue lick your brain.

Homemade “Baked” Beans

I am one of those people who never EVER skips breakfast. Whenever I wake up, I am usually starving and my body is ready to take in its first meal as soon as it can. As this is the first meal of the day, I try as much as possible to make it as balanced and as healthy as possible. When I have plenty of time on my hands, I always incorporate some protein in my breakfast since it keeps me fuller for longer. And since I have really high metabolism, this works to my advantage always :).

Baked beans are one of my fave protein breakfast dishes. They are so delicious and very filling. We usually buy the ready made ones in our home but I decided to try make my own at home. They were even better than the bought ones. This you must try!

Thyme and Garlic Dry Fry Goat Meat

Food is a medium that brings people together. It is the perfect ice breaker. It is a way that can bring people closer together. I also consider it a way of showing affection and/or appreciation for those around especially when effort and love is put in the preparation of their favorite meals. I am the kind of person who enjoys watching those close to me absolutely enjoy what I make for them hence I put my all in making their favorite dishes.

I know someone really special to me really loves goat meat. I have never made this dish for him yet as I was searching for the perfect recipe. I tried this out for myself first to see if the flavors blend, and for my sisters to critique and give their reviews. I loved it and my sisters enjoyed this so much, I just had to share it with you guys too. Now I know when I do make this dish for him, he will be blown away! I hope you make this for those close to your heart too 🙂
