Life. Love. Food

Poppy Seed and Orange Zest French Toast

Breakfast is slowly but surely becoming one of my favorite meal times. I have no concrete reason why, but I just love the ease and beauty that morning hours bring with them. Now that it is January and it is nice and bright, I love having breakfast sitting by the window, the house in complete silence ( I love silence), and just watching how beautiful and tranquil everything looks when kissed by the morning rays. It is a sacred time for me, where I listen to myself, center myself, and nourish my body before setting out to perform the day’s tasks. As much as I can, I try make my breakfast delicious and exciting. After all, being the first meal, and I like for it to set the tone for the day.

I did an Instagram Story for this very recipe last November and you guys COMPLETELY fell in love with it. A few tweaks later, I decided to put it on the blog and on YouTube as well so that you can have it forever <3, and those who missed out on it can also enjoy it!

Le’s watch the video first then come back here for the detailed explanations, why’s, how’s, and ingredient measurements. While you’re at it, do subscribe! <3

PREP TIME:  3 MIN   COOK TIME:  20 MIN       SERVES: 1

Ingredients

4 slices of bread

2 eggs

1/2 cup of milk

1 tablespoon of orange zest

1 tablespoon of poppy seeds

1 1/2 tablespoon of butter, melted

1/2 a teaspoon of nutmeg

1 tablespoon of sugar

1 teaspoon of vanilla essence

A pinch of salt

Method

In a container, whisk your eggs together with the milk, sugar, nutmeg. I chose nutmeg simply because I love how it tastes in breakfast dishes. You can use any sweet spice of your choice (cinnamon, cardamom) or a combination of any two or heck, even all three. Why not 😉 You can get all of these spices I have mentioned in any supermarket’s spice aisle at about 70 bob for the small can.

Once done, whisk in your orange zest. When I say orange zest, I am referring to the grated rind of an orange. I love the mellow and fragrant nature of orange zest, and it’s mild sweetness also made it a better option for me for my french toast. You can however use the zest of any citrus fruit.

Add the melted butter and then vanilla essence. Once combined, add your poppy seeds and mix them in.  Poppy seeds would also be bomb in crepes, pancakes and cakes. I bought mine from Tuskys but you can get them in every other supermarket as well.

Make sure the butter is molten,  but not hot, because if you add hot butter to the egg mixture you will end up with scrambled eggs in your bowl. We do not want that boo! :))

I always always always use vanilla extract by Naisenya foods, as I mentioned in this video. Vanilla extract is an actual derivative of real vanilla, while vanilla essence is the artificial, manufactured flavor of vanilla. The best quality substitute of vanilla (i.e essence) can never taste the same as actual real vanilla (i.e extract). Make the investment and get yourself real vanilla extract by contacting 0735 74 74 31. You’ll taste the difference. <3

Soak your slices of bread for as long as you prefer. I love only eat brown bread and I love using the one by the CarreFour Bakery that had lin seeds and sunflower seeds in it. Have you tried it out? I totally love it!

Once the mixture is absorbed, pan fry each side for about 3 minutes until golden brown. The entire universe house smelt so so good when these were cooking, with the notes of the orange and vanilla being most prominent! *cue stomach growl*

And now you know what’s next! Time to eat!!! I would have loved to have some freshly whipped cream with these as well, but since I had none, I hope you enjoy that combo on my behalf. When I say my poppy seed and orange zest french toast is about to be you greatest obsession, believe me, it is no lie!!

Fast meals do it need to be boring, and breakfast at home also does not need to be bland. Lucky for us, we can put together the most delicious of meals with what we have right here. The zestiness introduced by the orange is perfect to add some fruitness to a dish that would otherwise be only egg and bread. The vanilla extract not only made the dish smell amazing but also introduced the soft, creamy warmth vanilla inherently has and perfectly matched that of nutmeg.

After you are done with this one, please also try out my lime zest and amarula french toast as well. And before we wrap things up, make sure you pass by my channel and watch the video to this recipe. Msilenge hiyo video please :DDD

Much looooooooove!!
